GRS 004-660 PitchCup, shellac plate with shellac, Ø 50 mm, for BenchMate
The PitchCup is filled with a special asphalt-based material (called "pitch") that softens when heated. Fragile, small or irregular parts are held securely for engraving, stone setting or finishing.
The best heat source is a heat gun.
A small propane torch is also suitable as a heat source, but care must be taken not to overheat the pitch.
There are several ways to embed a workpiece in the pitch. One is to heat the pitch and press the workpiece in until it reaches the desired depth and position. Another method, is to heat the workpiece itself and place it on the unheated pitch. Heating both the pitch and the workpiece is also possible.
Once the pitch has cooled and set, the embedded workpiece can be machined. When the work is finished, the pitch is heated again to remove the workpiece. Pitch that adheres to the workpiece can be removed with a degreasing solvent.
